Pitocin and generic Oxytocin are synthetic forms of oxytocin, a hormone produced naturally in the body. Oxytocin is produced in high volumes during labor, causing uterine contractions. Pitocin or Oxytocin are often administered through an IV infusion to start uterine contractions, speed labor, or to decrease the time between contractions.
The placenta can handle most problems that develop naturally. However, the hasty actions of the medical team tending to the mother and baby labor pose a threat. Inappropriate use of Pitocin and/or Oxytocin is dangerous. It can hinder the placenta’s ability to deliver oxygen to the baby.
Excessive Pitocin and/or Oxytocin can make contractions occur less than 2-3 minutes apart. This reduces the ability of the placenta to replenish its oxygen supply. This excessive contraction frequency is called hyperstimulation. It can cause the baby’s brain to become starved for oxygen, leading to injury and/or disabilities.
Pitocin and excessive uterine contractions are among the most significant risk factors for the baby’s developing acidic blood. This can cause damage to all the cells in the child’s body, including the brain.
Pitocin / Oxytocin use can lead to:
Many injuries can occur when doctors try to prolong a vaginal delivery instead of performing a C-section. The improper use of labor drugs and/or instruments like forceps can cause permanent injuries. It is imperative that the medical team be skilled in all obstetrical procedures and follow the proper guidelines and standards of care.
Pitocin use is a common cause of uterine rupture. A recent study found Pitocin had been administered in 77% of one medical facility’s uterine rupture cases.
Maternal injuries and complications linked to Pitocin / Oxytocin include:
It is recommended that Pitocin / Oxytocin be used for labor induction only if the risk of continuing the pregnancy presents a threat to the life of the mother or child. These drugs must not be used electively to induce labor. Rather, they must only be used in cases of unplanned, emergency induction of labor.
Pitocin / Oxytocin should be avoided when the following conditions are present:

The plaintiff went to a Chicago hospital for delivery of twins via cesarean section. In the delivery room, a suspicious rash was recognized on one of the twins and later, fecal and urine cultures confirmed the presence of candida. She was started on prophylactic anti-fungal medicine and is healthy. The other twin was clear of any rash and though she was at risk for fungal infection, she was not treated in a timely manner. Later, a head ultrasound and MRI confirmed the diagnosis and damage to her brain. A lawsuit was filed on the plaintiff’s behalf. The case was vigorously defended by lawyers for the physician and the hospital that he worked for over 3 years. Eventually, a mediation took place at which time the defendants offered $3,000,000 to settle, which the plaintiff rejected. It was not until trial that the case settled for $10,000,000.
